Julianna

"Lady deWinter is but a two-dimensional shadow of our little Juliana."
-Gavin Merrick

The facts:

Juliana started life as a Baron's daughter far from the capital, on a very rural estate. Her father had served under Prince Julian in more than one conflict, was knighted on the field in Begma, and eventually raised to his Barony through his loyal service. Juliana is named for her father's benefactor, although she has never had any direct contact with Prince Julian.

Juliana married at twenty to Samuel Merrick, Count (Viscount?) Moorefield. Samuel was much older than her, and to all it was obviously not a love match. They had a very small wedding at his estate. Samuel died 38 years later. They were never able to have a child.

On Samuel's death without an heir his nephew, Gavin, inherited House Moorefield. Gavin generously gave her an allowance and allowed her to reside in his City House, saving her from having to return to her father's Household. Juliana enjoyed her freedom as a young widow. She spent most of her time (and money) slowly building self-sustaining charities in the worst parts of the City. She found she enjoyed the honesty of the lower classes much more than the constant trials she found trying to succeed within the noble classes.

At the same time, having found people she could really be herself with, she also found the motivations to raise her position.

About one hundred years after Samuel's death Juliana married Phillip Pinegar, Earl Carlisle, eldest son of the Duke and Duchess Carlisle. Only a hundred years older than her, they make a much better match than her first marriage. Rumor is Phillip proposed to her in King Oberon's presence and with his consent in leiu of the traditional father's agreement. They were married as quickly as could be arranged after their engagement, and was a very large and showy affair. After a week's holiday they left Amber to serve as the King's ambassors, first to Begma, and over the next two hundred years to nearly as many different nations in and out of the Golden Circle.

After their long absence they return to Amber upon the death of Duke Pinegar. They are happy to be returning home, despite the sad circumstances, and hope to settle in and start a family now that Phillip will be ascending to the Carlisle Dukedom.
